The Buffalo Pro II is a proper club table that happens to fit in a house. It's EPBF approved, which means it's built to the standard used at European Pocket Billiards Federation events, and you feel it straight away: the 185mm sport top rail is wide enough to lean on without the table giving an inch, and the natural rubber cushions throw the ball back fast and true.

Under the gloss black cabinet there's a wide frame with extra cross beams and a 20-point slate levelling system holding a 25.4mm three-piece slate. The 8ft weighs just under 400kg and the 9ft around 485kg, so once it's levelled it stays levelled. I'd put this in a dedicated games room, a club or a bar where it's going to get serious use every week.

Honest note: if the table is mainly for the kids and the odd game at a party, the Buffalo Dominator plays on the same genuine slate for a lot less. The Pro II is for the player who wants tournament feel at home.

It comes in two sizes, 8ft and 9ft, both with drop pockets and a ball collection box. The 9ft can also be ordered with a ball return system, which sends potted balls to a collection point at the end of the table.

8ft or 9ft: Which Buffalo Pro II Is Right for You?

The 9ft is the full-size American tournament table, with a 254 × 127cm playing surface, and it's the size used at professional 9-ball and 10-ball events. If you play in a league or want to practise on the same size you compete on, and you have the room, go 9ft. For most homes the 8ft is the better fit. Its 224 × 112cm playing surface is a big step up from a 7ft English pub table and still plays like a serious table, and it needs roughly a foot less room length than the 9ft.

Drop Pockets or Ball Return?

Drop pockets hold each potted ball in its pocket, the way most US pool halls play, and the balls are gathered into the collection box between racks. The ball return system, available on the 9ft, rolls potted balls to a single collection point at the foot end of the table, so racking up is quicker and there's no walking round every pocket. It suits clubs, bars and busy games rooms, and the table plays the same either way.

What Makes a Pool Table Tournament Standard?

It comes down to the parts you can't see. A tournament-standard American pool table needs a thick, precisely levelled slate, fast and consistent cushions, and a frame rigid enough that the table doesn't shift when players lean on it. The Pro II ticks every box: a 25.4mm three-piece slate on a 20-point levelling system, natural rubber cushions, a wide cross-braced frame and EPBF approval to back it up.
