Is a 6ft pool table too small?
Not for most homes. A 6ft table is a common choice for UK games rooms, garages and garden rooms, and it plays well for family and social games. The main reason to choose one is space: a 6ft table that you can cue around properly plays better than a 7ft table squeezed into a room that's too small for it.
The trade-off is for league and regular players. Most UK pubs and leagues use 7ft tables, and a 6ft table feels more crowded, so if you're practising for league matches, a 7ft pool table is the better fit if your room allows it.
6ft or 7ft pool table: which should you choose?
- Choose 6ft if your room is smaller than about 16ft × 13ft (the minimum SAM gives for a 7ft English table with a standard 57in cue), the table is mainly for family and friends, or it has to share the room with other furniture.
- Choose 7ft if your room comfortably takes it and you want the same size as a pub table.
Most of our 6ft tables are also available as 7ft, so you can pick the size once you've measured. SAM's figures show a 6ft English table needs about a foot less in length and 6in less in width than a 7ft with the same cue.
What size room do you need for a 6ft pool table?
You need room to draw the cue back on every side, so the room size depends on your cue length. These are the minimum room sizes manufacturers publish for 6ft tables:

What are the dimensions of a 6ft pool table?
"6ft" is a size class, not an exact measurement, and English and American 6ft tables aren't the same size:
- English 6ft tables (often called 6 × 3) have a playing area of about 156 × 80cm to 160 × 81cm, and play with 2in balls.
- American 6ft tables have a larger playing area of about 178 × 89cm to 180 × 90cm, and play with 57mm (2¼in) balls.

Slate or MDF 6ft pool table?
Almost every 6ft table we sell has a slate bed. Slate stays flat and level and gives a consistent roll. MDF tables are cheaper and lighter, but the bed can sag or warp over time. Delivery is included on most tables to mainland England and Wales, and installation is included on most American and premium slate-bed tables. Deliveries involving stairs carry an extra charge. Is a 6ft pool table worth it?
If your room can't comfortably take a 7ft table, yes. A 6ft slate table plays properly for home games. If you play in a league, practising on a 7ft table is closer to what you'll play on.
Do 6ft pool tables exist in American and English styles?
Yes. We sell both. English 6ft tables have a smaller playing area and use 2in balls; American 6ft tables are larger and use 57mm balls.
