What size is a pub pool table?

The standard UK pub table is a 7ft English table, measuring roughly 7ft × 4ft outside. On the SAM Balmoral 7ft, for example, the cabinet is 214 × 122cm and the playing area is 186 × 94cm. 6ft English tables (about 156 × 80cm playing area) are the compact option for smaller bars and homes.

Leave room to cue on every side. With a standard 57in cue, SAM recommends a room of at least 15'11″ × 12'11″ for a 7ft English table and 14'11″ × 12'5″ for a 6ft. In a busy venue, allow extra space for people walking past and waiting to play.

Coin-operated or freeplay pub pool table?

• Coin-operated suits a pub or club charging per game. The table holds the balls until a game is paid for, then releases them.
• Freeplay suits homes, staff rooms and members' clubs. There's no mechanism to empty or maintain.

Most tables here come either way. The SAM Balmoral and Atlantic have coin-operated versions and freeplay "Champion" versions. The DPT Omega Pro, Dynamic Premier and SAM Tempo are ordered as coin-operated or freeplay. Some, such as the Heemskerk Kick Shot, can also take tokens or contactless card payments. Can you have a pub pool table at home?

Yes. A pub table gives you the same size, pockets and feel you know from the pub. For home use, choose a freeplay version: the SAM Balmoral Champion, SAM Atlantic Champion or DPT Omega Classic are the freeplay equivalents of pub tables in this range, and you won't pay for a coin mechanism you don't need.

What makes a pool table pub-standard?

Pub tables are built to be played all day, so look at what the specification actually says:

• Slate bed. Every table here has one, mostly a single piece between 19mm and 22mm thick.
• A hard-wearing cabinet. For example, the WIK Viking uses HPL-laminated plywood with aluminium corners, and the Dynamic Premier has a Formica surface.
• Ball return. Tables such as the Dynamic Premier and SAM Magno collect the balls at one point, so nobody has to fish them out of the pockets.
• Weight. The 7ft tables here weigh about 245kg to 320kg, so they won't move when people lean on them. Check the route into the room before ordering.

Coin mechanisms and cloth are the parts that wear first. On the SAM Atlantic coin-operated table, for example, the coin mechanism and cloth are treated as wear items and sit outside the manufacturer's warranty.

Is delivery and installation included?

Delivery is included on most tables to mainland England and Wales, and installation is included on most American and premium slate-bed tables. Deliveries involving stairs carry an extra charge.
